The difference

Why we don't crush it for you

Most biochar arrives pre-crushed to a single grade, and pre-mixed with compost or potting soil — so you never really know how much char is in the bag. We do the opposite. Ours is pure, and we intentionally leave the pieces larger.

  • Heavy clay soil? Keep the pieces chunky to open up drainage and air.
  • Sandy soil or seed-raising mix? Crush it finer for more surface area.
  • Pots and worm farms? Somewhere in between — a few taps with a hammer in a bag.
  • Already activated. Professionally activated before packing, so it won't rob young plants of nutrients.

Your Char. Your Way.

How to use it

A rough guide to how much

Biochar isn't fussy — there's no way to burn your plants with it. These are starting points, not rules. Work it into the top of the soil and water in.

01

Pots & planters

A handful or two per pot, mixed through the top third of the potting mix.

02

Garden beds

Around 5–10% by volume — roughly 1–2 litres per square metre, forked into the top 10 cm.

03

Compost & worm farms

A few handfuls scattered through each layer. It cuts odour and holds the good stuff in.

You can't really overdo it, and you don't need to reapply every season — biochar is stable carbon that keeps working for years. Top up when you build a new bed.

The questions we actually get asked

What does "professionally activated" mean?

Raw biochar is hungry — straight out of the kiln its pores are empty, so if you dig it in as-is it can temporarily draw nutrients away from young plants while it fills up. Activating means loading those pores before it's packed, so it starts giving to your soil rather than taking from it. Ours is activated before it goes in the bag, so you can use it the day it arrives.

Why are the pieces so big? Shouldn't biochar be a fine powder?

That's the whole idea. Different soils want different grades — chunky pieces open up heavy clay, finer char suits sandy soil and seed-raising mixes. Ship it pre-crushed and that choice is made for you. We leave it larger so you can crush it to whatever suits your patch. A bag and a hammer, or a few passes with a garden spade, is all it takes. That's Your Char. Your Way.

Which size should I start with?

If you're new to biochar or gardening in pots and on a balcony, start with the 1 litre Patch Starter. If you've got a compost bin, a worm farm or one raised bed, the 3 litre Patch Builder is the sweet spot — it's the size most people land on. For veggie gardens, fruit trees or building new beds, the 5 litre Garden Bed Booster goes furthest and costs the least per litre.

Can I use too much?

It's very hard to. Unlike fertiliser, biochar won't burn your plants. Around 5–10% by volume is the usual starting point for garden beds, and a handful or two per pot. If you go over, the worst case is you've spent more than you needed to.

How long does it last?

Years. Biochar is stable carbon, not compost — it doesn't break down over a season. Mix it in once and it keeps holding water and nutrients for a very long time. Most gardeners top up only when they build a new bed.

What's it actually made from?

Reclaimed Australian Blackbutt hardwood — timber that would otherwise have gone to landfill. It's slow-baked in a low-oxygen kiln here in Sydney, activated, then hand-packed in small batches. No pallets of imported char, no fillers, no compost bulking it out.

What does delivery cost, and where do you ship?

We currently ship to New South Wales, the ACT, Victoria, Queensland and South Australia. Shipping is calculated at checkout based on where it's going, so you'll see the exact cost before you pay. Orders are dispatched from Sydney within 1–3 business days.

Western Australia, Tasmania and the Northern Territory are on hold for now. Those states run stricter quarantine rules on soil products, and our courier's network doesn't cover all of them for what we send. We'd like to get there — if you're in one of them, email us and we'll count you in when we work it out.

Is it safe around kids, pets and edible plants?

Yes. It's pure charred hardwood — the same material that's been used to build soil for centuries, and nothing is added to it but the activation. It's not a fertiliser or a chemical. It will happily blacken your hands, so gloves are a good idea, and like any fine dust it's best not to breathe it in while you're crushing it.

Something's wrong with my order.

Email us at hello@buyurchar.com and we'll sort it out. We're a two-person operation in Sydney, so you'll be talking to the people who made it.
