Biochar is one of the oldest soil tricks there is. The deep, dark “terra preta” soils of the Amazon were built with it centuries ago. Worked into your garden today, a small handful of recycled carbon does a surprising amount of good.

Yes. It suits vegetable beds, raised beds, pots, fruit trees and ornamentals. It works best when “charged” with compost or worm castings first, so it doesn’t draw nutrients away from young plants.
A common starting point is around 5 to 10% by volume worked into the top of your soil, roughly a handful or two per potted plant, or a few litres per square metre of garden bed. You can top up over seasons.
A lot of the biochar on the market is sold pre-mixed with compost or potting soil, so there’s no way to know how much actual char is in the bag. We sell ours pure. That puts you in charge: add as much or as little as your soil needs (the amounts above are a good guide), keep it chunkier for heavier clay soils, or sift it finer for sandy ones. That’s your char, your way.
